Training
and certificates

Every training path on this site in one place: 118 careers you can enter through a certificate, a license, an apprenticeship or a short program instead of a four-year degree. Filter by how long it takes, what it pays, what it costs and what field it is in, then sort by whichever of those matters most to you right now.

Before you pay anybody

Check the community college first, every single time
A private career school will charge $15,000 for a medical assistant program that a community college runs for a few hundred dollars in fees, and the employer cannot tell which one you attended. California College Promise can make the first year free outright. The only time a private school is the right answer is when no public program exists nearby or the waitlist is genuinely years long.
Filter to paid or free training before anything else
Thirty-six of these are free, employer-paid, or pay you while you learn. Apprenticeships, dialysis training, CDL programs at freight companies, Procore, Trailhead, Microsoft Learn and the FAA academy all cost nothing. Start there before you consider spending money.
Accreditation is not a detail, it is the whole thing
Surgical technology needs CAAHEP accreditation, histotechnician needs NAACLS, imaging needs JRCERT, dental hygiene needs CODA, and paralegal work in California has its own statutory requirement. A certificate from a non-accredited program will not make you eligible to sit the exam, and people find that out after paying. Verify accreditation with the certifying body, not with the school.
Get hired first when you can
Dialysis companies, sleep labs, optical retailers, dental labs, histology labs and title companies all hire people with no credential and train them toward certification. Hospitals pay tuition for existing employees. Getting a badge first and letting the employer fund the credential beats self-funding almost every time.
On program availability and these figures
Schools open and close programs, and pay ranges move. Everything here is approximate as of mid-2026 and drawn from public sources. Pay bands are estimated from the top of each stated range, so treat them as a sorting tool rather than a promise. Confirm the program is currently offered and currently accredited before enrolling, and confirm licensing with the California board that issues the license rather than with a school recruiter.
